22 October 2011, Kabul; His Excellency Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, Non-Resident Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has presented his Letter of Credence to His Excellency Hamid Karzai, President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

The ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace on 22 October 2011. After the official ceremony, His Excellency Hamid Karzai gave audience to His Excellency Azeez and discussed about the bilateral relationships between two countries. The credential presentation ceremony was attended by Colonel Ali Zuhair, Defence Advisor of the High Commission of Maldives in India and Senior Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

 
12 October 2011, New Delhi; Second Meeting of Honorary Consul Generals/Consuls of Maldives in India was held on 11 October 2011, at the High Commission of Maldives in India.

The meeting was organized by the High Commission to strengthen the relationship between Honorary Consul Generals/Consuls and the High Commission and to interact with each other and to discuss various issues and challenges faced by the Honorary Consul Generals/Consuls.

The programme included welcome remark by the High Commissioner followed by a statement from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ahmed Naseem, delivered by the High Commissioner. Ms Aishath Azeema, Counselor of the High Commission briefed Honorary Consul General/Consuls on the roles and functions of the High Commission. Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Joint Secretary (BSM) Ministry of External Affairs of India Mr. Harsh Vardhan gave a brief speech on Maldives-India relationship prior to the presentations by Consul general Consul Generals/Consuls.

The meeting was attended by Hon. Consul General of Maldives in Kolkata, Mr. Chandra Shekhar Jaiswal, Hon. Consul of Maldives in Chennai, Dr. S.M. Balaji, Hon. Consul of Maldives in Bangalore, Dr. Joseph V G, Hon. Consul of Maldives in Mumbai, Mr. Shalin Tandon and Diplomatic Staff os the High Commission.

This is the Second meeting of the Honorary Consuls of the Republic of Maldives in India. The first and the second meeting were held in July 2007. Altogether Maldives is currently represented in India by three honorary consuls and one Honorary Consul General.

 
26th September 2011, Male’; The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Hon. Ahmed Naseem met Hon. Alistair Burt, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State of the United Kingdom for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

During the bilateral talks, Hon. Ahmed Naseem expressed his gratitude to Hon. Alistair Burt for the support he had given to the democracy movement in the Maldives. Hon. Naseem went on to highlight the importance of democracy to the Maldives and stated that, “the idea is to build democracy, not just to win elections”. He emphasized the strong commitment of Maldives to transparency, an independent judiciary and to anti-corruption measures, and acknowledged that there remains more to be done.

Minister Naseem further commented on the economic potential of SAARC and discussed how enhanced regional trade could lead to mutually beneficial results in South Asia.

Hon. Alistair Burt conveyed his strong support for Human Rights and complimented the Maldives on its efforts. He further discussed the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, Australia.

Other issues that were discussed included the investment of British Companies in green technology in the Maldives and also efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Aslam Shakir, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hawla Ahmed Didi, the High Commissioner of Maldives to the United Kingdom, Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, the High Commissioner of Maldives to Bangladesh, Ahmed Sareer and Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives Mission to the UN, Thilmeeza Hussain.
