Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid met with senior officials of the United States National Security Council today.

At the meeting held at the National Security Council in Washington DC, Minister Shahid discussed on-going cooperation between the Maldives and the US in the areas of security, and discussed avenues for joint cooperation.

Minister Shahid was accompanied in the meetings by Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN and Ambassador to the United States, and Mr. Ahmed Nasir, First Secretary at the Maldives Mission in New York.

At the meeting held with Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, Ambassador Alice Wells, discussions were held on ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and the United States, including strengthening governance and democratic consolidation in the Maldives.

“There is a profound dependency, — a mutual dependency — between Indian Ocean and the Maldives” says Foreign Minister Shahid in his speech delivered at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today, on the topic, Maldives and Indian Ocean security.

At the Round Table held at the CSIS in Washington DC, Minister Shahid stressed on the Maldives belief that a stronger partnership between the United States and the Maldives is crucial for promoting maritime security in the Indian Ocean.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid met with senior officials of the United States Department of Treasury and the USAID today.

At the meetings held in Washington DC, areas of further cooperation on capacity building, human resource development, and financial sector management for the Maldives, were identified.

Minister Shahid was accompanied in the meeting by Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Mr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN and Ambassador to the United States.

Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, H.E. Keiko Yanai, paid a courtesy call on Vice President Faisal Naseem. The meeting was held this morning, at the President’s Office.

During the call, the Vice President acknowledged and extended deep appreciation for Japan’s generous support and assistance provided to the Maldives over the years. The Vice President also expressed interest to promote the Maldivian tourism industry in Japan. 

The Ambassador and Vice President discussed ways of enhancing cooperation between the Maldives and Japan on a range of bilateral issues, placing special emphasis on the areas of trade, education, sports and health.
